A heteroatom-containing oligomeric corrosion inhibitor based on p-phenylenediamine, formalin and monochloroacetic acid was synthesized, and the effect of component molar ratio on its protective performance and physicochemical characteristics was evaluated. p-Phenylenediamine:formalin:monochloroacetic acid ratios of 1:1:1, 2:2:1 and 1:2:2 gave protection efficiencies of 82.22, 94.31 and 89.19% for St20 carbon steel, respectively, identifying 2:2:1 as the most effective composition among those studied. FTIR analysis supported the presence of aromatic fragments and nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups. TGA/DTA revealed mass losses of 49.785% at 38.22–389.44 °C and 32.444% at 388.02–750.29 °C. The results indicate that the synthesized oligomer is a promising corrosion inhibitor for St20 carbon steel.
